SITE VISIT REPORT – Gandhi Sagar Dam
Purpose of Visit
The purpose of the visit was to make students familiar with experience of field work and to get practical knowledge of directing water through dams, distribution of water and hydroelectric power generation. Students of civil branch will get the idea of dams and their purposes. Students will also get familiar with catchment area, hydraulic gates, and level of water, wing wall and body wall.
Brief description:
The Gandhi Sagar Dam is one of the four major dams built on India’s Chambal River. The students got the opportunity to meet the Engineer Dilip who explained the working procedure of Dam’s Gate. Dam supports a 115-MW hydroelectric power station at its toe, with five 23-MW generating units each providing a total energy generation of about 564 GWh.

Outcome / Key Deliverables:
- Students have enhanced their technical and practical knowledge by visualization of hydraulic structures such as Gravity Dam, Hydro Power Plants and other allied structures.
- From this visit, students got information about storage of water. They learnt about working and technology involved in operation of hydraulic gates.
- Students were benefited from this visit as they got chance to discuss with authorities working at dam and at hydro power plant.
- Thus this technical visit will go a long way in improving the learning outcomes of the burgeoning civil engineering graduates of Mandsaur University.
